Then, Nazis destroy their little heaven, condemning father and son to a concentration camp. In wooing Dora for instance, he gate-crashes her school, goofing around as a school inspector, and he shows up at the opera and steals her from her fiancé, in pouring rain. So, their ordinary lives feel extraordinary. His gift for concocting coincidences mid-conversation sweeps his listeners off their feet, sometimes quite literally. Guido’s slapstick actions, often silly, turn every mundane moment into something magical. He marries a schoolteacher, Dora (Benigni’s wife Nicoletta Braschi), and they live a blissful life with their 5-year-old boy, Giosuè (Giorgio Cantarini). This tragi-comedy is about an early 20th century Italian-Jewish waiter, a Chaplinesque Guido (Roberto Benigni who writes, acts in, and directs the film). However, he is soon is arrested and thrown behind bars.This year marks the 25th anniversary of Roberto Benigni’s classic “Life Is Beautiful” (1997), which won three Oscars (Best Actor, Foreign Language Film, and Score). And so, by the will of fate, Antonio himself becomes a revolutionary. She turns out to be a member of an underground resistance which is in the midst of preparing an armed uprising. But meeting the beautiful waitress Maria radically changes his peaceful life. Now he leads a quiet and unremarkable life, trying not to get into trouble. Previously, he had been stripped of his military rank for failure to comply with an order to open fire on a ship full of civilians attempting to flee the country.
Antonio’s strong character remains intact though. His country is dominated by a dictatorial government that does not accept freedom of speech and democracy.
The main character of the movie, the former pilot Antonio Murillo, works as a taxi driver, but recalls the old days when he used to be master of the sky. Life is Beautiful, also known as Betrayed, is a joint Soviet-Italian film production directed by Grigory Chukhray.
